PRB Day 2 (SFRM)-Teachable MomentsWednesday, May 19 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Room: 317 | | When unplanned events occur and the analysis of the event is complete, others may learn how to prevent similar occurrences if the openness to create “teachable moments” exists. Here are a few such teachable moments:
Flyash silo fire
Coal feeder flash fire
Combustible dust flash fire during housekeeping activities near a motor control center
Coal pipe (Flash) fire
Coal conveyor fire
“PAC” (activated carbon) silo fire | | Chair: |

PRB Day 2 (SFRM)-Behavior-Based SafetyWednesday, May 19 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM Room: 317 | | The North Omaha Station was ready to take its safety performance to the next level. For years the proactive effort increased, yet performance remained about the same. Best-in-class performance was established as a goal for the station. To achieve this goal a safety culture assessment was conducted, followed by the implementation of a site-specific behavior-based safety program. Learn the unique steps taken by North Omaha Station to begin the journey toward achieving and sustaining safety excellence. | | Chair: |

PRB Day 2 (SFRM)-Combustible Dust Compliance StrategyWednesday, May 19 2:00 PM - 2:30 PM Room: 317 | | Recent government scrutiny surrounding combustible dust in the manufacturing sector has resulted in heightened standards in awareness training and workplace housekeeping. Martin Lake Steam Electric Station is using a combination of employee training and involvement, procedures, and existing risk management equipment to help raise awareness and effectively clean dust build-up in operating areas. The presentation will review several examples of Martin Lake’s employee training, housekeeping procedures, and use of fire suppression systems to minimize dust accumulations in several areas of the plant. | | Chair: |

PRB Day 2 (SFRM)-Respirable DustWednesday, May 19 2:30 PM - 3:15 PM Room: 317 | | As a new head of OSHA and a new head of MSHA take over their leadership roles, respirable dust standards and discussions are being reinforced for mining, and considered for “coal processing plants” and other areas of exposure. It is critical that we become more familiar with new movements in lowering PEL’s (Personal Exposure Limits) to “stop the continuation of health hazards at current levels”. This discussion will be brought together with the Combustible Dust and EPA compliance expectations to enable a comprehensive and coordinated approach towards safety and health. | | Chair: |
